When COVID-19 prompted communities across the globe to shut down and governments mandated social distancing, many of us were exhausted by another Zoom hangout with friends. We grappled with the risks of a wildly unknown illness and rapidly adapted our habits and routines to a new way of life. Above all, most of us were lonely.

I packed a bag to hibernate away from busy downtown Toronto for a predicted 6 weeks, but those weeks never ended. I missed friends and I didn’t know how to process our new, shared reality. Using the limited tools and materials I had tucked into that overnight bag, I adapted my Postcards from Home project into Pandemic Postcards.

The initial intention was to mail these thoughtfully crafted 4”x6” original collages to friends and family, they rapidly became a set of visual journal entries, exploring and processing everything from staying home, virtual connection, family, turbulent news stories, being anti-racist and work-related burnout.
